Travellers to the Ambergris-Caye can travel by a water taxi from Belize City to San Pedro. The journey, primarily on open boats, seating 20 people, takes about seventy-five minutes. On a bright, quiet day, it is a excellent opportunity to see Belize; on a rainy, breezy day the journey can be wet and unpleasant.

When you walk out the airport, get a cab and order the driver you to go to the Marine Terminal in Belize City. The taxi is US$25, and it will take about 20 minutes to get there. You can pay with U.S. dollars. It is a nice ride, with impressing sights of the Belize River, and downtown Belize City. There's no need to tip the driver unless you've many bags.

The water taxi terminus is next to the notable Swing Bridge. Enter and purchase your tickets to San Pedro at a small cage inside the office. Fare is US$12.50 one-way to San Pedro, per individual. If you have come close to time of departure, you will see people passing their suitcases to guys who will place them on the boat. Or if there's more time prior to the boat departure, the baggage is piled up in a roped area.

If you have spare time, you could walk around a bit on Front Street or go to the Image Factory, which is close to the Marine Terminal and one of the finest places to see and buy modern-day art in Belize. There is also a small Maritime Museum in the Marine Terminal. Or you could just take something to drink and sit and wait in the terminal.

It is about a 80 minute ride out to San Pedro. Almost all the boats stop shortly at Caye Caulker. You arrive at a wharf on the front (east) side of San Pedro. You can walk, or take a taxi, or your hotel will have arranged to meet you.
