San Pedro is the small town in the centre of Belize’s Ambergris Caye. Somehow San Pedro is synonymous with Ambergris Caye, although the town doesn't actually constitute the whole island. There is an airstrip in San Pedro as well as the main port, therefore on numerous holiday booking web sites you will be searching San Pedro as the way to get to Ambergris Caye and island's beautiful hotels and holiday resorts.

San Pedro is the home for more than five thousand year-round inhabitants, but not a single construction higher than three levels, so this is more of a small town than a city.

San Pedro town is the primary shopping and restaurant zone of the island so even if you're staying at a holiday resort, you will wish to spend some time here in the downtown of San Pedro. There is a small library near the primary school where even tourists can read books for free as well as buying some second-hand books for a few dollars.

Many San Pedro’s streets are not paved. What really makes Ambergris Caye and San Pedro so pleasant and quiet is the fact that there are few actual cars and trucks on the island. People use golf carts and bikes in order to move from A to B.

There are two banks with automated teller machines in San Pedro. Also a market, a drugstore, a hardware shop, a local post office, a wine shop, and several travel agencies in the downtown of San Pedro.

The town is so small that almost everyone gets around on foot, but whenever you need speedier journey, you can hire a golf cart or even a bicycle. Both could be hired hourly, half-day, full-day, or week, and apparently the bikes are much cheaper than carts. Golf carts could be a great way to see the island, but the electric carts do not have the range for a complete island tour. You will be asked to remain within a couple of mile range. Otherwise you can be stranded. Some rent a car companies rent gas-powered carts with a better range.

Most of the hotels and holiday resorts on the island are situated outside of San Pedro's downtown. There's a hostel a couple of minutes north of the town centre. Most of those tourists who come to this island are curious in snorkelling and diving, so you should think twice about reserving a hotel room right in the downtown of San Pedro if that is your goal as well. The nicest, luxurious hotels and holiday resorts are all northbound and southbound of San Pedro, with the northern region of the island being the most beautiful and most lush.
